Plate rolling machine maintenance and safety

Shop floors everywhere are feeling the need for roll forming professionals or roll forming training for their team. Because there is a lot of technical knowledge, roll forming remains an intricate job and something not too exciting to be involved for many operators. Many variables and working formulas can make this process harmful both for the production and for the worker when not being in experienced hands.

You just might be getting into in-house roll forming, or maybe, you are considering investing in a new plate rolling machine or machine technology. Therefore, one of the primary goals plants should have when working with plate rolling machines is operator safety together with good machinery maintenance. If you can fulfil these goals, then there is a chance for good, consistent work.

We’ll give you some tips for conducting safe operations and good maintenance on your plate rolling machine.

Safety first

Safety should undoubtedly be the primary goal to achieve on every shop floor. It is known that the operator’s job is physically challenging and demanding. One of the first tips we can give to any roll forming worker to ease their job is to know their machine system. By understanding the structure and build of the machine, they can create a better vision of its performance. Then, they can answer a lot of questions.

  • Is this machine going to be efficient and effective for my line of work?
  • What flexibility tolerance am I going to have with this machine?
  • Can this machine handle my production pace?
  • Am I going to have downtime or avoidable delays in my duty cycle?

When the operator knows the machine, they create a safer environment for themselves and the team. At the same time, they can create products without mistreating the machine, making it last longer and avoiding additional malfunction costs.

During operations

Workers should pay attention to the position of material in the feeding process. The plate should be perpendicular to the centreline of the lower shaft. Also, the joints and transmission mechanisms should be checked frequently. To avoid unnecessary damage and malfunctions, operators should also check the oil supply in lubrication points from time to time.

When unloading the workpiece, the bottom and side rollers should be lowered, and the head should turn upside down. After the job, buttons, handles, and all controllers must be in their original positions. For difficult jobs, always seek the help of teammates or some experienced professional to assist you during your task. If, at any point, there is unusual noise, vibrations, or leakage, it is mandatory to stop immediately and not start any operation again until the problem is detected.

Contact with the machine and its moving components is categorically forbidden. Operators must always work from a safe working distance, as away as possible from moving components.

We at RS Machinery value operation safety as one of the focal points in giving a good purchasing journey to our customers. If you want to know more about what we can offer, please give us a call. Our team will be happy to help as soon as possible.

Maintenance

As we said, checking the state of lubrication points is an important step for the machine’s longevity. Before starting a production process, the machine should have a healthy lubrication system in place. The best way to determine the presence of any irregularities is to carry out frequent inspections. It is preferable to implement a bi-yearly inspection for each machine system in your production shop.

If there are any vulnerable parts or damaged ones, they should immediately send for repair or be replaced with new ones. Keeping old parts hinders performance and slow down the pace from excessive use. Another necessary inspection indicator is when certain parts get easily heated and raised from their standard temperature. Any heat that is not durable by touch may carry the risk for additional problems. The oil, on the other hand, should not be higher than 60 °C. Lastly, examine the electrical system. All parts should be grounded and frequently dusted.

Preliminary measures

Emergency termination controls should be installed in the plate rolling machine to prevent future safety issues.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective headgear, glasses, gloves combined with appropriate technical clothing are a must for every operator. Using protective equipment increases safety and lowers the chance of accidents, cuts, and lacerations. Also, operators must avoid anything that may get trapped or caught from the machine.

Conclusion

Like every other forming operation, roll forming has its own guidebook that needs to be followed for the best results. Depending on the type of process and desired shape, operators have to face many complex uses of a plate rolling machine.

Being able to prevent bruises, wounds, or machine hazards comes with great experience and knowledge. During roll forming operations, workers are also exposed continuously to metal dust, which contains toxic particles. These particles can cause life-long respiratory problems or different skin reactions. Therefore, a clean environment with ventilation is a crucial condition for safe working.

Our team has extensive know-how in forming operations, including roll forming. If you are planning to invest in your plant, call us for a one-on-one, and we can assist you in finding the best plate rolling machine for your needs.
