Why an automated manufacturing system is a must for the decade

Whether your factory is developing a shop floor, or enterprise-level automation, there is no denying that automated manufacturing has become the norm for producers worldwide.

We’re living in a time of major transformation where the classic factory tasks are already digitalised. This was undoubtedly a necessary change for the stable continuity of manufacturers.

Consequently, there is one thing producers have at the top of their list now; peak profitability. However, not at the expense of quality and worker safety.

A symbiosis of the above-mentioned can be done only by using automation, improving productivity for maximum output, and efficiency.

Manufacturing is a complex and challenging sector. If you’re in this field, here’s what the new decade wants you to know:

Automated Manufacturing Systems are a decision for the long run

An Automated Manufacturing System can operate automatic processes, under computer control. Top advantages of the implementation of manufacturing automation are:

  • Safer for employees
  • 24/7 runtime
  • Improvement of product quality
  • Low error margin
  • Higher yields
  • Higher accuracy in data collection

The only drawback is the cost of the initial investment, which includes the machinery itself, implementation, and employee training.

Automation systems improve the efficiency of operation, reduction in energy consumption and operating costs, and utilities’ life cycle.

They also help the environment by saving energy for heating and lighting.

In a recent study, the Global Building Automation System market size was valued approximately at $101.91 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach $215.59 billion by 2027 growing at a CAGR of 11.10% from 2020 to 2027.

Furthermore, companies can save millions in operational costs by automating their processes.

Automation is decreasing 70% of the breakdowns and facilitating the manufacturers in saving up to 12% on equipment repairs.

Proactivity

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report noted that machines would contribute 42% of total task hours in 2022. Experts predict that up to 133 million new roles may emerge as companies embrace automated manufacturing systems and uncover new opportunities for humans to work alongside machines.

World Economic Forum states that proactive reskilling efforts over time are necessary to both safeguard workers and support the future needs of the “smart factories” of the future. For that, we need “continuous training and full worker engagement”.

Similarly, data and analysis from McKinsey&Co show that as of 2015, machines automated 64% of working hours spent on manufacturing-related activities globally.

“These 478 billion working hours represent the labour equivalent of 236 million out of 372 million full-time employees—$2.7 trillion out of $5.1 trillion of labour.”

These figures suggest that, even though manufacturing is one of the most highly automated industries globally, there is still significant automation potential, not just in production system automation, but in related functional areas such as supply chain and acquisition as well.
